Mesilla, New Mexico

After leaving Silver City, New Mexico and heading toward Las Cruces, we were told to go and check out the little town of Mesilla, so of course we did.

As we came into the town we saw lots of birds in the trees, I am always interested in trying to find out what kind they are. Well no surprise here, these are morning doves, hundreds of them. A little different than what we have in the north, white feathers on their wings, but the same sound and colors. We usually never see a large flock like this, one or two at a time at our feeders back North.

We didn't go into the state park, this sign was located on the edge of an irrigation ditch, filling the fields with water. The road led you down what we would call a dike, we decided that maybe this was not the entrance... We were heading to the town anyways so we kept on going.

As we drove in the area these were some of the homes near by...

When I think of our trip and the homes in the Southwest, this is what I remember, this is typical style of the Adobe. Easy maintenance, no grass here, but of course heat rules what lives in the yards.

As you drive into the town square you see this beautiful church. This is the San Albino Basilica Catholic Church.

This church was built in 1852.

A beautiful church inside, with much history to tell. We were greeted by a man who's was the third generation of Bell ringers for the church. He was very proud of his heritage and his church.

We seem to be following the Butterfield Overland Trail, of course it went thru this town of Melsilla too...

I just love the iron benches around the square inviting you to come and sit awhile.

This is the Thunderbird de la Mesilla the oldest documented Brick Building in New Mexico....Read the plaque and find out who built it and how he was murdered, and the fates of the following owners.....

And this is what it looks like.

The streets were made of bricks, in this picture at the end of the street we saw this little cafe/Restaurant.

Check out the tables, all ceramic just beautiful.

And this is what it looked like inside. It is called the Don Felix....The walls were filled with people from the town, pictures of family and citizens of the town from way back, like taking a trip down memory lane. On the other wall was the wonderful Adobe Stove for taking the chill off during winter months....Enjoyed a wonderful burito breakfast, with apple cider drink. Spent a lot of time chatting with the owners, always fun to learn from the local residents.

When we were leaving town I saw this Inn, Josefina Historical Inn.

http://josefinasoldgate.com/ Now this is a place I would love to come back and stay. Wish we could have stayed longer in Mesilla, would have loved to investigate every nook and crany.... Only 2,000+ people live there now and there is no more room for expansion, but everyday the streets are full of tourists and people from Las Cruces trying to get away from the city life.
